Gregory Phillips Architects brings more than 30 years of London-based experience to designing exceptional private homes, and Berkshire is home to two of our most significant new-build projects: an award-winning contemporary house in Caversham, and a spectacular new house on the banks of the Thames in the village of Sonning, both recognised with RIBA Awards among a wider list of accolades.
These two projects reflect a genuine understanding of what it takes to deliver ambitious new build houses across Berkshire’s varied councils, from Reading to Wokingham and beyond.
Projects of this ambition are rarely straightforward, and we’d be glad to discuss what’s involved, whether it’s a new build, a renovation or an extension.
Berkshire Architects
Our new house in Sonning is one of the studio’s defining projects: a replacement house on a spectacular twelve-acre site sloping down to the River Thames, in a village with roots as an Anglo-Saxon ecclesiastical centre. The house is arranged around a courtyard built from local rough knap flint, echoing a construction method used in the village since Anglo-Saxon times, with a double-height entrance hall looking straight down to the river, a gym, spa and cinema room, and garaging for six cars. The project won an RIBA Award alongside a further eight accolades, including the International Property Award for Best Interior Design and the Sunday Times Home Award for Architecture. In Caversham, we replaced a dilapidated existing building with a 5,950 sq. ft, five-bedroom modernist new build, blurring the line between inside and out by using the same brick, timber cladding and polished concrete both internally and externally. The house was designed to meet the Code for Sustainable Homes standard, and it too went on to win an RIBA Award and feature on Channel 4’s Grand Designs “House of the Year.” View the Berkshire project here.
Berkshire spans several different planning authorities, and our work across the county has taken us through many of them, not just Reading and Wokingham, home to our two flagship projects, but several other councils besides. Each has its own local plan, its own conservation area policies and its own expectations for a project of this scale, something we navigate on a case-by-case basis rather than assuming one approach fits the whole county.
Projects of this ambition depend on getting delivery right as much as design: at Sonning, that meant sourcing marble and leather from quarries and suppliers in Italy and coordinating a wide team of specialist contractors on site. We manage this process closely on every project, working with trusted builders and consultants so the finished home matches the ambition of the drawings.
It’s the kind of project the studio is known for: a confidently contemporary house set within a village, and a county, that remains traditional at heart.
