Gregory Phillips Architects has more than 30 years of experience as a London architectural studio, designing exceptional private homes. On Barrowgate Road in Chiswick, we transformed a detached Edwardian property with a sculptural extension anchored by a beam clad in bronze patinated metal, an idea developed from a project we’d completed in Wimbledon, adapted to suit this house and its owners.
The project unified the house with its garden, added a basement with a games and cinema room and a purpose-made wine cellar, and unlocked the whole property as a proper modern family home, one of several projects we’ve delivered across Chiswick’s mix of Edwardian, Victorian and Arts and Crafts properties.

Chiswick Architects
On Barrowgate Road, we carried out a substantial extension and basement to a detached Edwardian property, unifying the house with its garden and unlocking it as a proper modern family home. The design is anchored by a striking beam clad in bronze patinated metal, supporting the extension’s open corner while doubling as a sculptural feature in the garden, an idea developed from a project we’d completed in Wimbledon. The flying corner removes the need for structural roof support, so all the glazing can slide away entirely, opening the kitchen and living space directly onto the garden. Below, a new basement added a games and cinema room and a purpose-made wine cellar, reached partly by a hidden staircase that doubles as a garden entrance and fire escape. Elsewhere in Chiswick, we’ve also extended a traditional Arts and Crafts house, adding a contemporary garden design and new indoor-outdoor living spaces, the kind of sensitive, contemporary addition that characterises much of our work in the area.
Chiswick sits within Hounslow’s most conservation-controlled area, the borough has 28 conservation areas in total, most concentrated in Chiswick, Brentford and Isleworth, and parts of the district carry an additional Article 4 direction restricting even small changes like replacement windows and doors. Basement projects in particular receive close scrutiny. We prepare for this at every stage, and we bring the same discipline to delivery: working with trusted contractors and staying closely involved on site so a finished project matches what was designed, not an approximation of it.
Chiswick’s character sits somewhere between village and city, a mix of grand houses, garden squares and riverside streets, overlooked by Chiswick House, the district’s most celebrated building.
