SUSTAINABLE DESIGN PRACTICES

We are pleased to announce that Gregory Phillips Architects is now a member of The Green Register of Construction Professionals.

Since 2000 The Green Register has trained thousands of construction professionals from all disciplines of the industry to build better, more sustainable buildings. As architects, we recognise we have a duty of care to design homes that are not only beautifully crafted but that are mindful of their impact on the environment.

Designing holistically, allows us to consider all aspects of a home from the building itself to its interiors and surroundings and how more sustainable design practices can be woven into the fabric of the build to future-proof our clients’ living space.

To find out more about the Green Register, visit https://www.greenregister.org.uk/ or take a look at our website to learn about how to approach a design brief here: https://gregoryphillips.com/work-with-us/

CURRENT PROJECTS

We are currently working on the design of projects in the London areas of Barnes and Stanmore as well as projects in Cheshire, Sheffield and Surrey.

STANMORE

We are excited to see our scheme at Stanmore Hill nearing completion. This unequivocally contemporary home makes the most of the site but is also modest in scale. A ground-floor basement level is cut into the hillside creating terraces and planted areas which are punctuated with courtyards. This allows the house to maximise the use of outside spaces and also minimise its visual intrusion into the surrounding Conservation Area.

We look forward to showcasing more of this completed home in the coming months.

INTERNATIONAL

Our luxury architecture extends to projects outside of the UK.

We have designed many international projects working with local architects and consultants as well as contractors and developers located in various countries around the world. Showcased below are concepts produced in Atherton, California, and Malibu.

Next week, Gregory will be visiting a series of fantastic new projects in Los Angeles and San Fransisco. Please connect if you have a project in California for us to design.

CURRENT PROJECTS

We are currently working on the design of projects in the London areas of Barnes and Stanmore as well as projects in Cheshire, Sheffield and Surrey.

BRIDGE HOUSE IN CHESHIRE

This project is the remodelling of an existing grade 2 listed, detached, two-storey dwelling located in Cheshire that sits within the designated Green Belt.

The client’s aspirations are to enhance this historic house, undoing previous inappropriate changes, plus adding a unique, exemplary extension to the rear, that improves both connectivity within the house, but also between the house and the rear garden.

The aim is to create a high-quality family home to be lived in for the foreseeable future, and a piece of architecture that both response to and enhances the site and surrounding countryside.

SHEFFIELD

Our proposal in Sheffield is for the creation of a 2-storey new build replacement dwelling with a basement.

The clients bought the property in late 2021 and it is their intention with this rebuild to make the site their long-term family home.  With the existing houses having very little architectural merit, they saw an opportunity to build a new exemplary home that better serves their requirements and provides a modern family home.

The client has approached Gregory Phillips Architects to design this new replacement dwelling.

The scheme is intended to include rainwater harvesting systems, solar-controlled glazing, solar panelling, an air source heat pump, and green roofing to provide an opportunity for biodiversity

Architectural Services

Each project Gregory Phillips takes on is a chance to create something unique and spectacular, taking the client’s vision of their dream home from plan to reality. We ensure homes look, flow and feel exactly as they imagined—achieved by our exceptional level of architectural services and attention to detail.

We subdivide our architectural services into foundational and other services, such as sustainable design and site selection. In addition, GPA offers design services unique to each project, whether newbuild architecture, remodelling, or concept and landscape design.

We carefully manage issues of feasibility, procurement and planning permission from the outset, allowing our clients to relax and enjoy watching their dream home take shape from start to finish.

Gregory Phillips Architects offer a holistic service, combining high-end building design with interior and landscape design. We manage each construction stage in-house—always utilising open spaces and maximising light—and work closely with a network of skilled craftsmen and specialists.

Some of our completed projects have been honoured with the highest accolades. These include prestigious Royal Institute of British Architects awards and nominations for the ‘House of the Year’ competition, ‘Best Individual House in the UK’ and ‘The Best House in Europe’.

Scope of work

In collaboration with the client, we determine the scope of work to be designed—the research and development stage. We will ask questions to gain an understanding of your design aspirations and any problems that may arise.

Design development

Next, through a series of sketches, formal drawings and computer-aided designs (CAD), GPA develops the floor and site plans and building elevations for a complete design of the building. The process encompasses structural and mechanical considerations, as well as HVAC, plumbing and electrical decisions.

We will always aim for a cohesive scheme that ensures a seamless experience from concept design to the finished home.

Gregory Phillips Architects take care of every aspect of your project, making best use of the square feet available to provide a floor plan to suit your needs. View our Work with us page for more information.

Architectural Design Services

Gregory Phillips’ design teams tailor building projects to the way the clients live. We draw upon an established and trusted network of talented craftsmen and suppliers to create exquisite homes.

Each interior design project, from inception to completion, incorporates concept design, CAD drawings, specifications for construction, lighting design, project management, bespoke furniture design and selection.

New Houses

While considering the specific location of each project, GPA creates tailored new houses to match the client’s individual lifestyle. Whether a compact urban site or rural landscape with extensive views, the goal is to maximise the potential of the site and deliver a modern home with exceptional living space.

In all new-house design projects, GPA determines what materials best reflect the location and aesthetic. And it’s not just exterior considerations. We are often engaged to carry out the interior design and build and select furniture and soft furnishings.

Remodelling

GPA’s architectural services extend to projects that involve the remodelling and extending of existing houses. Remodelling projects may involve re-organising historic and existing buildings to create luxury homes suitable for today’s lifestyles and ways of living.

Clients may require remodelling services such as basement or loft conversions or space renovations to accommodate swimming pools, leisure areas, gyms and bedroom suites.

When carrying out projects involving listed buildings, we’re always sensitive to the historic aspects of houses whilst adding contemporary elements.

Concept Design

Although often included as part of a holistic service, Gregory Phillips also offers concept design as a standalone architectural service. The reason for this is that the client may require additional flexibility between the separate design and construction stages.

However, we will also develop initial concept designs before providing architectural and interior design services for the project from inception to completion of the construction.

International

Gregory Phillips Architects extend their modern house services to projects outside of the UK.

Typically, the local team to the location obtain the site information, deal with obtaining planning consent and permits, and organise the construction.

We collaborate with the client and local team to create a contemporary house that provides the modern home desired.

Interior Design

It’s critical that our structural engineers understand the client’s vision to create interiors that exceed their expectations and create luxurious yet practical spaces using a range of materials, such as timber, stone, marble, leather, metal, concrete and glass.

Our interior design services extend to bespoke cabinetry and furniture for bathrooms or kitchens. We’ll also help the client select soft furnishings and styling to the rooms with rugs, blinds, curtains, linen, art work and objects to make the house a home.

Integration of state-of-the-art audio-visual systems, security and lighting controls can also be part of the interior design service.

Gregory Phillips Architects is a boutique London-based architecture and interior design practice, specialising in contemporary luxury homes.

We have recently been working on the design proposal for the remodel and extension of an existing dwelling in Palo Alto, California.

In this project for a developer the square footage has been substantially increased while also creating a coherent and harmonious piece of architecture.

The existing house has been comprehensively enhanced and extended to take advantage of its spectacular site to provide a striking contemporary family home. A double height extension will be added onto the house to form a central ‘great room’ with formal living, dining and library spaces, while a brand new basement level is equipped with spa, gym and cinema spaces. The property will also include a newly designed garage complex, annex building and pool house which is strategically designed to complement the existing house and sloping landscape.

Totteridge is a striking new-build contemporary house in a London conservation area. This substantial property is designed as a long-term family home, replacing an existing dated bungalow that the clients had lived in for years.

The design is unequivocally contemporary, and contrasts to the surrounding traditional neighbouring properties – yet references the materials of the local area. Built predominantly of brick and timber, these materials are reimagined in a unique way – where brickwork is suspended above a lightweight timber and glass ground floor. This playful juxtaposition of the construction creates a distinctive and high-quality aesthetic that is used both inside and out.

Rainy day at our almost complete new build house in Totteridge, with very happy clients, it is very existing to see the final touches going in. The landscape has been installed and is beginning to set within its surrounding.  Landscaping is a vital aspect to any project, we believe that any landscape design should be balanced and unified to complement the look and feel of a building.

Our New Build single storey dwelling and artist studio in Totteridge is progressing nicely through detailed design. We are currently looking at the internal design and specifications for project. During this stage we use 3D renders to make the process of designing easier. By creating life-like images for our clients, we give them an idea of what we hope to achieve with the design at a glance. This enables us to close the gap between what we are thinking and what the client sees in their mind.

We have recently completed the extensive refurbishment and complete strip-out of a Knightsbridge apartment. The existing apartment layout was cleverly reconfigured to make the most of the given areas while considering the clients’ needs and requirements. This refurbishment included the renewal of most of the mechanical and electrical services taking into consideration the constraints of working within an existing building.  With exceptional views of Hyde Park as well as the rest of London, the apartment has three bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and an open plan living, dining and kitchen space.

M A T E R I A L I T Y

Through attention to detail, proportion and scale, we designed a layout which complements and respects the character of the existing building. The palette of materials and detailing creates a contemporary aesthetic. Finally, to provide functionality as well as clearness within each of the spaces we included floor to ceiling cabinets throughout the apartment, hidden behind finely crafted panelling.

We are currently co-ordinating the delivery and installation of the selected furniture for the apartment. We have chosen the furniture not only to complement the aesthetics achieved in the architecture, but to also reflect the clients’ taste.

The Material Palette of our Hampstead Project (Refurbishment, Basement and extension) sought to incorporate contrasting materials both in terms of colour and texture. Professional interior shots will also be released. The approach aimed to create a ‘modern farmhouse’ look to suit the clients brief and lifestyle.

Creating an Architectural Journey that begins the moment you enter the property is a key element of the success of our award winning homes.

A meandering driveway leads to this new house . Announced by an external reflecting pool and flanked by monolithic garden walls, it leads to a central courtyard completely encircled by walling and out-buildings. This parti, inspired by the traditional country house with rear courtyard and stabling, ensures that the picturesque open site, remains unobstructed. Entrance to the house is via a covered walkway which crosses the reflecting pool and into a breath-taking double height entrance space. The internal layout of the house provides four wings of accommodation oriented to provide the best daylight, views and interaction with the surroundings.
Inspired by traditional country houses with adjoining stable yards, the layout of this home in Berkshire evolved from a simple diagram incorporating a protected centralised courtyard flanked by glazed single-aspect rooms affording magnificent countryside views.  The extensive contemporary flint-work used within the courtyard reinterprets the flint-work within the surrounding village, and in particular the medieval church that is within view of the property.  Entry to the house itself is made by crossing an enclosed reflecting pool leading into a double height space, where the architectural journey continues.
