RIBA AWARDS 2024

We are delighted to announce that our recently completed project in Totteridge has been shortlisted for the RIBA London Award 2024.

The client approached Gregory Phillips Architects to design a house that could offer an architecturally exemplary replacement to the previous 1960s bungalow. The brief was for easy-use, single-storey living which would relate well with the various external areas of the site.

A sense of arrival was essential, thus visitors are firstly guided through the entry courtyard bordered by a mature Maple and encompassed by 3 sides of modern brick walling, before then being led into the entrance hall, which feels like an extension of this external space.

The exterior of the house has been cleverly designed, whilst considerate of its Conservation Area location. The dark-toned dwelling sits well within the intensely green landscaped garden. The end result is a striking contemporary new house that provides the owner with a fantastic living environment whilst complementing its surroundings.

PROJECT UPDATES

We have recently achieved planning success on two projects in Hertfordshire and are looking forward to construction commencing later this year.

This proposed house is located in the North Hertfordshire district boundary and within greenbelt designated land, with surroundings characterised by suburban housing plots with detached single-family dwellings.

The house is intended as the permanent home for the owner occupier, who would like to replace the current dilapidated dwelling to create their long-term family home. This proposal seeks to create an attractive and cohesive building which complements the site and provides a home of architectural and environmental merit.

Planning approval has been granted by virtue of the proposal having no great impact on the openness of the green belt as the footprint of the building is largely unchanged compared to the existing dwelling. The new building also rotates the first floor part of the house through 90 degrees to reduce its impact when viewed from the street. The outcome is a house that appears modest in size compared to many nearby properties so that the feeling of openness around the site remains.

This proposed house is located within the Hertsmere district boundary, in an area characterised by large suburban housing plots incorporating large detached single-family dwellings of traditional design.

Planning success has again been achieved, with the front elevation closely responding to the context, by reference to the classical proportions of the local Georgian typology. At the rear, we have created a modern interpretation of the traditional villa form.

The chosen materials are also traditional and appropriate to the area, being widely used in neighbouring houses.

The proposal incorporates brickwork walls under a tiled roof, and front sash windows, which will be contrasted to the rear with slimline glazing to increase visual connectivity with the rear gardens. The rear will be clad in the same brickwork as the front of the property, for continuity, and will include dark-coloured metal-clad dormers to the roofscape.

LANDSCAPING DESIGN

The relationship between interior and exterior spaces is a key consideration within our projects. Therefore, with the aim of delivering a holistic design process, and through collaboration with specialist landscaping consultants, we remain heavily involved with this aspect of our projects. This results in light-filled architecture which connects seamlessly with its landscaped gardens and outdoor spaces.

Below is a selection of projects which showcase this aspect of our designs.

TOTTERIDGE III

The brief was for single storey living which would relate well with the various areas of the site, whilst enjoying far reaching views from the main living spaces. Whilst considerate of its Conservation Area location, the dark toned dwelling sits well within the intensely green natural landscape of its garden.

COBHAMHOUSE

Situated on one of the area’s most prominent private roads, the house has been significantly extended. a new pavilion structure which would run perpendicular to the existing house, creating a better relationship with the garden, and moving the kitchen and informal living and dining areas into the pavilion. The garden was reconfigured, and a new external swimming pool was created.

A highly glazed ‘walkway’ was introduced to link the main house with the single-storey work-from-home studio – giving a physical link between these spaces, whilst also providing a ‘stroll through the garden’ for anyone walking from one space to the other

TOTTERIDGE II

The design is unequivocally contemporary, and contrasts to the surrounding traditional neighbouring properties – yet references the materials of the local area. Built predominantly of brick and timber, these materials are reimagined in a unique way – where brickwork is suspended above a lightweight timber and glass ground floor.

This playful juxtaposition of the construction creates a distinctive and high-quality aesthetic that is used both inside and out, and allows for seamless transitions between the interior and exterior spaces.

CHISWICK

Fluid relationships between the interior and exterior spaces are formed via vast sliding doors that open out onto the garden; the luxurious ranges of fabrics, natural stone and marble create layers of texture.

A sculptural extension clad in patinated brass panels was added to the rear of the house offering more sunlight and space to the ground floor areas whilst creating an exceptional openness to the newly landscaped garden.

BATTERSEA HOUSE

In plan, the unusual wedge-shaped house means that the house is much larger at the rear than the front, with the end of the garden extending the width of four terraced plots.

Gregory Phillips Architects sought to maximise the potential of the house by creating extensive new additions at the rear, opening up the house to the garden through modern open plan spaces while retaining the formal reception rooms and more traditional features to the front.

SEVENOAKS

This extensive Grade II Listed building refurbishment in Sevenoaks included reconfiguration and contemporary extension to a farmhouse and barn in Kent. By reconfiguring the Ground Floor plan and adding a contemporary glazed extension housing the new kitchen, the property now provides the family with an arrangement suited to open plan living, while maximising views of the idyllic rural setting from the rooms they spend the most time in.

The transition and relationship between interior and exterior spaces have been carefully considered. The proposed landscaping was designed and detailed by Gregory Phillips Architects to complement the character of the extension and gently integrate the sculptural form of the extension into the surrounding landscape.

BERKSHIRE II

Occupying a spectacular woodland site overlooking the river Thames, At the centre of the house is a unique double height entrance and dining hall, with six-metre tall sliding glazed doors and glass walls, providing a theatrical connection between inside and out.

Arriving into a modest entrance space, one is then gradually led into the double height entrance hall where the views of the site are finally revealed.

Materially, the house uses robust, raw and contrasting materials that were considered not only in respect of neighbouring properties, but also the dominant landscape.

HERTSMERE

Image produced by Bluestone Landscapes LTD

Within this project, front sash windows will be contrasted to the rear with slimline glazing to increase visual connectivity with the rear gardens.

Articulated amongst vibrant landscaping, the exterior spaces will include various patios incorporating a dining area and informal seating areas, as well as an outdoor kitchen, and an 18m swimming pool. To the rear of the garden, the proposal also includes a pavilion containing a gym and lounge, again offering further connection to the gardens and pool.

CURRENT PROJECTS

We are currently working on the design of projects in the London areas of Barnes and Stanmore as well as projects in Cheshire, Sheffield and Surrey.

STANMORE

We are excited to see our scheme at Stanmore Hill nearing completion. This unequivocally contemporary home makes the most of the site but is also modest in scale. A ground-floor basement level is cut into the hillside creating terraces and planted areas which are punctuated with courtyards. This allows the house to maximise the use of outside spaces and also minimise its visual intrusion into the surrounding Conservation Area.

We look forward to showcasing more of this completed home in the coming months.

CURRENT PROJECTS

We are currently working on the design of projects in the London areas of Barnes and Stanmore as well as projects in Cheshire, Sheffield and Surrey.

BRIDGE HOUSE IN CHESHIRE

This project is the remodelling of an existing grade 2 listed, detached, two-storey dwelling located in Cheshire that sits within the designated Green Belt.

The client’s aspirations are to enhance this historic house, undoing previous inappropriate changes, plus adding a unique, exemplary extension to the rear, that improves both connectivity within the house, but also between the house and the rear garden.

The aim is to create a high-quality family home to be lived in for the foreseeable future, and a piece of architecture that both response to and enhances the site and surrounding countryside.

SHEFFIELD

Our proposal in Sheffield is for the creation of a 2-storey new build replacement dwelling with a basement.

The clients bought the property in late 2021 and it is their intention with this rebuild to make the site their long-term family home.  With the existing houses having very little architectural merit, they saw an opportunity to build a new exemplary home that better serves their requirements and provides a modern family home.

The client has approached Gregory Phillips Architects to design this new replacement dwelling.

The scheme is intended to include rainwater harvesting systems, solar-controlled glazing, solar panelling, an air source heat pump, and green roofing to provide an opportunity for biodiversity

New Houses

Concept Design

Although often included as part of a holistic service, Gregory Phillips also offers concept design as a standalone architectural service. The reason for this is that the client may require additional flexibility between the separate design and construction stages.

However, we will also develop initial concept designs before providing architectural and interior design services for the project from inception to completion of the construction.

CONCEPT DESIGNS

We design projects throughout the UK and internationally. We often design the concept for a project and later work with local Architects to ensure our clients obtain the vision we set out to achieve.

The beginning of all our luxury house design projects involves understanding our clients’ requirements and ambitions. In many instances we develop initial concept designs and then go on to provide architectural and interior design services for the project from inception to completion of the construction. We also offer concept design as a standalone service, allowing clients’ to work with us to achieve their ambitions and requirements in a way that best suits them.

One of our international concepts is shown below, with more set to be showcased on our website in the near future.

This project for a new build house is located in a secluded location in Atherton, California. The project is a large house located in a woodland setting, with a stream and significant changes in level but with limited outdoor space.

The client wanted to maximise the use of the site by creating a substantial new house and create a greater visual impact as the existing house is largely concealed from view when approached. The house needed to incorporate 6 bedrooms, formal living and dining spaces, a family kitchen, family living and dining spaces as well as a basement with cinema and games room spaces. There was also a requirement to create a dramatic entrance.

The solution proposed was to rotate the building 90 degrees to face the driveway creating a more traditional front and back, public and private organisation of the house. The garage provides a link to the utility and kitchen spaces while there is also a more formal approach which draws you through a dramatic courtyard setting to the double-height entrance hall, allowing a through view to the pool and garden area at the rear via a formal living and dining area.

Architecturally, on the upper levels, a timber framework has been used to break down the bulk of the building and give it greater visual lightness. The building incorporates various terraces which allow the maximisation of the available space while creating a luxurious treehouse feel to the bedrooms overlooking the tree canopies and the stream.

The large flat roof allowed for the integration of Solar panels to provide electricity for much of the house’s heating and cooling requirements as well as EV car charging, and water is collected from the roof for irrigation purposes.

We are delighted to announce that the family house we designed at Totteridge Common has been shortlisted for the RIBA London Awards 2022.

The house was designed to take advantage of the site’s North-South orientation. The front South side of the house faces the road and is made up of a series of solid volumes, with exaggerated deep window reveals. The rear, by contrast, is highly glazed with minimal structure beneath, allowing for uninterrupted views towards the surrounding green belt countryside.

It was important to ensure that the South sun, and quality of light, could be enjoyed in the winter. The design is focused on a single depth main family room, which takes advantage of light from both the front and rear. On the first floor, the windows are set deep into their reveals, so as not to overheat during the summer.

The fabric of the building, cladding, flooring, and windows, were carefully considered for quality and longevity. The building’s envelope is built to a high specification. Highly-insulated lightweight stud walls infill between the structural steel frame.

The house is unequivocally contemporary and contrasts to the surrounding traditional neighbouring properties, yet references the materials of the local area. Built predominantly of brick and timber, these materials are reimagined in a unique way.

Totteridge is a striking new-build contemporary house in a London conservation area. This substantial property is designed as a long-term family home, replacing an existing dated bungalow that the clients had lived in for years.

The design is unequivocally contemporary, and contrasts to the surrounding traditional neighbouring properties – yet references the materials of the local area. Built predominantly of brick and timber, these materials are reimagined in a unique way – where brickwork is suspended above a lightweight timber and glass ground floor. This playful juxtaposition of the construction creates a distinctive and high-quality aesthetic that is used both inside and out.

Rainy day at our almost complete new build house in Totteridge, with very happy clients, it is very existing to see the final touches going in. The landscape has been installed and is beginning to set within its surrounding.  Landscaping is a vital aspect to any project, we believe that any landscape design should be balanced and unified to complement the look and feel of a building.

Our New Build single storey dwelling and artist studio in Totteridge is progressing nicely through detailed design. We are currently looking at the internal design and specifications for project. During this stage we use 3D renders to make the process of designing easier. By creating life-like images for our clients, we give them an idea of what we hope to achieve with the design at a glance. This enables us to close the gap between what we are thinking and what the client sees in their mind.

We have recently completed the extensive refurbishment and complete strip-out of a Knightsbridge apartment. The existing apartment layout was cleverly reconfigured to make the most of the given areas while considering the clients’ needs and requirements. This refurbishment included the renewal of most of the mechanical and electrical services taking into consideration the constraints of working within an existing building.  With exceptional views of Hyde Park as well as the rest of London, the apartment has three bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and an open plan living, dining and kitchen space.

Through attention to detail, proportion and scale, we designed a layout which complements and respects the character of the existing building. The palette of materials and detailing creates a contemporary aesthetic. Finally, to provide functionality as well as clearness within each of the spaces we included floor to ceiling cabinets throughout the apartment, hidden behind finely crafted panelling.

We are currently co-ordinating the delivery and installation of the selected furniture for the apartment. We have chosen the furniture not only to complement the aesthetics achieved in the architecture, but to also reflect the clients’ taste.

We are progressing with Detailed Design of an exciting New Build single storey dwelling and artist studio in Totteridge. Designed to maximise extensive views of the landscape and solar gains on the site, the house will have lesser demand for space heating during the winter months. An overhanging roof will reduce solar gain and keep the spaces cool during the summer months. We’ll be posting updates as the job progresses to site.

The Material Palette of our Hampstead Project (Refurbishment, Basement and extension) sought to incorporate contrasting materials both in terms of colour and texture. A palette of dark honed stones, beautifully lustrous silks, aged bronze metalwork and dark stained timber with natural warmth coming through were compiled to create a luxurious, striking architectural interior.

We spent last week shooting a recently completed modern extension to an old farmhouse in Kent. Gregory’s portrait (shot at the project), will feature in the Modern Man section of the next Issue of Angelino I Modern Luxury Magazine in LA.
Professional photos of the whole project to follow.  In the meantime , here are some photos of the shoot taken by our team to show how we created a modern piece of architecture which successfully creates an open plan kitchen and living space linking the grade II listed home and existing barn while maximising views of the beautiful 70acre grounds beyond.
Professional interior shots will also be released. The approach aimed to create a ‘modern farmhouse’ look to suit the clients brief and lifestyle.

Creating an Architectural Journey that begins the moment you enter the property is a key element of the success of our award winning homes.

A meandering driveway leads to this new house . Announced by an external reflecting pool and flanked by monolithic garden walls, it leads to a central courtyard completely encircled by walling and out-buildings. This parti, inspired by the traditional country house with rear courtyard and stabling, ensures that the picturesque open site, remains unobstructed. Entrance to the house is via a covered walkway which crosses the reflecting pool and into a breath-taking double height entrance space. The internal layout of the house provides four wings of accommodation oriented to provide the best daylight, views and interaction with the surroundings.
Inspired by traditional country houses with adjoining stable yards, the layout of this home in Berkshire evolved from a simple diagram incorporating a protected centralised courtyard flanked by glazed single-aspect rooms affording magnificent countryside views.  The extensive contemporary flint-work used within the courtyard reinterprets the flint-work within the surrounding village, and in particular the medieval church that is within view of the property.  Entry to the house itself is made by crossing an enclosed reflecting pool leading into a double height space, where the architectural journey continues.

Grade II listed Farmhouse – We have just completed full refurbishment and extension to a Grade II listed farmhouse and barn in Kent. We reconfigured the Ground Floor plan and added a stunning new contemporary extension to link the house and existing barn. Photos of the house and extension are to follow. However, in the meantime, we’d like to share some images of the indoor pool which was refurbished (from an elaborate romanesque bath type style to modern simplicity!) along with a photo our client took of his new home in the brief period of snow we experienced in the UK this winter.

Brickwork – Attention to detail at its finest – every one of the bricks in the photos below has been set out on a drawing by Gregory Phillips Architects. The same brick laid in a different pattern will add texture and interest to the facade of this new build home in Totteridge. Its always amazing to see our drawings come to life!

Los Angeles – In contrast to the snowy picture above, our designs for new build houses in LA are progressing nicely. Great opportunities to play with sunlight and shadows and make the most of ocean views!
