Malibu

This project comprises a large and dramatic luxury single-family residence set within an expansive site in Malibu, conceived as a private retreat that balances architectural presence with a strong connection to landscape. The design responds to the region’s climate and lifestyle, prioritising seamless indoor–outdoor living and long axial views across water and outdoor terraces which also aid passive cooling.

The client brief called for a substantial contemporary home capable of accommodating both large-scale entertaining and intimate day-to-day family life. Central to the concept is a dramatic sequence of water elements, including a full-length swimming pool paired with a linear reflecting pool that establishes a clear visual axis through the house. These features are integral to the spatial organisation, amplifying light, creating cooling microclimates, and reinforcing a sense of calm throughout the property.

Arrival is choreographed through a forecourt which dramatically bridges the reflecting pool leading to a double-height reception space with immediate views across the swimming pool and into the landscape beyond. The ground floor is arranged as a series of interconnected living, dining, and entertaining areas, all oriented toward the water and opening onto shaded terraces. Large sliding glazing panels dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior, enabling flexible use of space throughout the year.

Private accommodation is located on the upper level, where bedroom suites benefit from elevated views, privacy, and access to terraces. A lower ground level accommodates leisure and wellness facilities, including a cinema, gym, and spa, supporting the home’s role as a self-contained retreat.

Materially, the architecture combines refined natural stone, smooth render, and expansive glazing, with deep overhangs and screens providing solar control. The restrained palette allows the interplay of light, water, and landscape to define the character of the house, creating a tranquil yet highly functional environment tailored to contemporary luxury living in Malibu.
