Contemporary design in period surroundings
London is an old city, with parts of it dating back to Roman times. Unsurprisingly, the central areas of London are full of period buildings reflecting this long history.
When homeowners are considering improvements to their property, they may be concerned about finding the balance between contemporary design and historic appearance.
Importantly, the conservation area of Belgravia and the Grosvenor Estate, which includes many of the district’s villas and white stucco townhouses, endeavour to preserve the area’s unique character. As such, projects in Belgravia need to strike a balance between the area’s rich architectural history and tenants’ wishes for contemporary designs.
Local experience
Gregory Phillips Architects have carried out a number of projects in Belgravia and the surrounding areas including Westminster, South Kensington, Chelsea and Hyde Park.
While GPA is renowned for contemporary design, our approach is always to create a timeless classic. We have extensive experience of working with listed and other historic buildings, providing a carefully considered and unique approach to create interior and exterior designs that combine the best of both worlds.
As experienced Belgravia architects, we also understand the official policies of the planning and building control departments of the City of Westminster. We ensure our clients—whether developers, investors or homeowners—understand what the policies are and how they may affect their design aspirations.
Gregory Phillips are also experienced Bayswater architects and have carried out several projects in the district—an area within the City of Westminster in West London and one of London’s most cosmopolitan areas.
Combining old and new
Modern design works with important features such as making the most of natural light, and having comfortable, functional spaces that flow into each other, creating a home that is easy to live in.
More traditional designs often break the spaces up into smaller units, reflecting the way life was lived in earlier times.
It is possible to blend the two styles together harmoniously, both inside and out.
Gregory Phillips has produced many award-winning projects for both architecture and interior design. Where appropriate they can include a new landscaping design to complement a new build—whether that is an entire house or an extension.
By looking at the project holistically—both the fabric of the building and the interior fittings and décor—they are able to create a design that matches the requirements of the owners while knitting the old and new aspects of the building closely together.
Recent projects in the area
Recent projects by Gregory Phillips include substantial remodelling of a property in Knightsbridge creating an entirely new interior experience; basement excavations to create additional living space either for general family use or special purposes; and sizeable residential extensions complete with new landscaping to accommodate the changes. Special purpose accommodation added to various homes during these works include a swimming pool, cinema room, wine storage, office accommodation and other features.
Belgravia architecture
Belgravia architecture displays a sense of harmony and grandeur and is characterised by its late Georgian and Regency building designs. The district features a mix of large and small (mews) houses and, since the 1960s, these have been highly desired by people from all across the capital.
Historic England, which champions England’s heritage, has listed a number of Belgravia’s properties and buildings for their architectural significance. Much dates back to Thomas Cubitt’s designs from the 1820s, with much remaining intact today.
Gregory Phillips has produced many award-winning projects for both architecture and interior design. Our recent works include new-build contemporary homes, basement excavation and remodelling projects, which we deliver on time and on budget.
As experienced Belgravia architects, we can transform the inside of a mews house to feature the space, light and ease required by contemporary living—all while ensuring that the outside of the house retains its early 19th century splendour.
Impartial and creative thinking
Regardless of size of project, Gregory Phillips approaches each design with a fresh eye, and a desire to create something that will enhance the lives of the owners. The practice has earned a widespread reputation for its high calibre work, generating extensive coverage in national and international media. By fully understanding their clients’ needs and sensitively translating these into designs of the highest standards, they create contemporary, elegant solutions of exceptional quality, that will not look out of place among period surroundings.
