For more than three decades, Gregory Phillips Architects has run a London studio designing exceptional private homes, with a recent project in Belsize Park that added a rooftop storey, a rear extension and a full internal remodel to a terrace house, transforming the layout while keeping the design calm, contemporary and true to the character of the street.
Belsize Park’s period buildings and stucco-fronted terraces sit within a Camden conservation area governed by an Article 4 direction, which removes permitted development rights for almost all properties here, meaning even modest changes typically need full planning permission.

One of our projects in Belsize Park involved adding an additional storey at roof level, a rear extension and a full internal remodel of a terrace house, reworking the layout to create a calm, contemporary family home, while keeping the exterior in keeping with the surrounding period streetscape.
Belsize Park is one of Camden’s conservation areas, and like most of them, is subject to an Article 4 direction that removes permitted development rights for the vast majority of properties. In practice, this means most extensions, roof additions and material changes require full planning permission and a supporting heritage statement, even for changes that might be unremarkable elsewhere. We prepare these applications regularly and know what Camden’s planning officers expect to see.
Once a scheme has permission, delivering it well matters just as much as designing it. We work with contractors and specialists we know and trust, and stay closely involved through construction so the finished home matches what was designed and agreed.
Belsize Park is a small but distinctive part of Camden, known for its period buildings and easy access to Primrose Hill and Hampstead Heath.
