One of our most striking projects in Bayswater involved the transformation of a Victorian mews house on Hyde Park Garden Mews: an entirely new frontage in brick and historic detailing, layered onto a new steel-framed structure within. Extending through excavation created room for a large kitchen and reception with a study area, a media room, a gym, three bedrooms and two bathrooms, all behind a façade that remains true to the mews’ historic character.
Bayswater’s Victorian stucco terraces and mews streets, laid out in the nineteenth century around Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens, sit almost entirely within a conservation area administered by Westminster City Council. Full planning permission is required for most external changes here rather than the lighter-touch permitted development rights available elsewhere, something we navigate regularly, having prepared applications and heritage statements for similarly sensitive Westminster settings.
