For more than three decades, Gregory Phillips Architects has run a London studio designing exceptional private homes, including projects across Surrey and the wider commuter belt around Farnham.
Farnham’s housing stock spans everything from Georgian townhouses and converted barns to Arts and Crafts and Victorian properties, alongside opportunities for new build homes. It’s the kind of variety we’re well suited to: our work nearby includes a Grade II listed country house on the Hog’s Back, between Farnham and Guildford, and the conversion of a 17th century threshing barn as part of a listed farmhouse in Kent.
If you’re planning a project in Farnham, we’d be glad to discuss what’s possible for your property, including how Waverley Borough Council and its conservation areas are likely to shape the design.
Architects in Farnham
Farnham is often described as one of England’s finest Georgian towns, and its housing reflects that range: Georgian and Victorian townhouses in the centre, Arts and Crafts houses in the surrounding villages, converted barns and country houses further out, and increasingly, opportunities for ambitious new build homes, the kind of variety our work across Surrey and Kent has prepared us well for.
On the Hog’s Back, the ridge connecting Farnham and Guildford, we extended and renovated a Grade II listed country house, adding a contemporary pavilion for a new kitchen, living and dining space alongside a basement swimming pool that opens onto the garden through the site’s natural changes in level. The new addition was designed as a distinct, glazed volume set apart from the historic house, allowing the original building to remain structurally unaltered. The project followed a full conservation-led process, including a historic-interest appraisal and close dialogue with Guildford Borough Council’s conservation officer. See our Guildford project here.
Elsewhere, we’ve converted a 17th century threshing barn as part of the renovation of a Grade II listed farmhouse set within 40 acres, replacing a dated conservatory link with a bronze-clad contemporary pavilion and glazing the barn’s original door openings to create a dramatic “great room” living space, the kind of transformation that could suit many of the barns and outbuildings found around Farnham. See our Sevenoaks project here.
Farnham falls under Waverley Borough Council and has six conservation areas along with around 360 listed buildings, so heritage considerations shape most projects here in some way. We have direct experience of the Listed Building Consent process and of working with conservation officers on sensitive sites, both on the projects above and elsewhere in Surrey and Kent, and where a project calls for it, we bring in trusted planning and heritage consultants to support the application.
We also bring a trusted network of contractors, landscape designers and specialist consultants to every project, and stay closely involved through construction so the finished result matches the ambition of the design, whatever the scale or setting.
Whether it’s a Georgian townhouse, a barn conversion or a new build, we’d be glad to talk through what’s possible for a property in Farnham.
In Farnham, our studio offers the full range of architectural services, with involvement from concept design and planning consents through to construction information and house styling.
